A Contemporary Choral Anthology

In 2007, ICYO held their inaugural charity concert called Swara Perdana, which in Sanskrit means “The First Voice”. After the success of Swara Perdana, ICYO has continued to support the community through subsequent charity concerts, entitled Gelaran Sembilan (2009), Traya (2013), and Fortissimo (2015). At each of these events, we have been fortunate enough to have the support of about 400 audience members, and this number has been steadily increasing.

ICYO’s fifth charity concert is named after Sanskrit origin word, “svara”, means “sound”. As Bahasa Indonesia was largely developed from Sanskrit, “suara” carries the same denotation and pronunciation to its Sanskrit form.

From Indonesia’s traditional songs to international anthem, ICYO Choir is going to perform many hits and favorites for every generations to enjoy.

Deaf School Project

Karya Mulia School for the Deaf is located in Surabaya, East Java. It is the biggest Deaf School of its kind in the province which has a population of some 39 million people.

There are 200 students enrolled at Karya Mulia, ranging in age from 4-18 years. There are 50 teachers on the staff, none of whom have a formal qualification as a teacher of the deaf.

A program for early detection and diagnosis of deafness in children under the age of 3 has been implemented at the school. This is complemented by an early intervention program to promote language and communication development.

The school is undertaking a capacity building program to improve the outcomes for its students. This program requires resources and equipment to achieve the goals that have been set.

Along with The Rotary Club of Mount Lawley, ICYO is going to help Karya Mulia School on building and improving its environment for a better learning experience for its students to ensure the best education for the students.

Priorities for support include:

  1. Teacher training in the teaching of speech.
  2. Management of hearing aids to promote listening and auditory skills development
  3. Audiological equipment to support early diagnosis of deafness and training of staff in the use of this.
  4. Training of staff to support teachers in regular schools where deaf students are enrolled.
  5. Teaching and learning resources including musical instruments.
  6. Professional library for staff and other teachers in the province.

This is an ambitious project aimed at establishing Karya Mulia as the leader in the field of deaf education and the major resource for other schools to seek advice and support.
